Dreaming Big

Why should the school day change?
1

OPTIMAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

What If...

  • ...AI-based systems could help organize each school day according to the dynamic requirements and learning opportunities that are presented?

  • ...there could be flexibility built into daily school schedules to account for different lessons, individual illnesses, weather, traffic, special guests, professional development, and any of the many other elements that can impact a traditional school day?

  • ...we could take into account affinity, interest, and optimal conditions when setting daily schedules and routines?

  • ...school schedules were not bound by set routines simply because it is too difficult to make adjustments at the last minute?

  • ...there were digital personal assistants connected with our mobile technology that truly had the “big picture” of the entire organization?

The environment can have a significant impact on learning.  There is a growing trend toward flexible learning spaces in schools.  We have come to understand that the traditional desks and chairs facing the front of the classroom is not always the best way to learn.  Flexibility within spaces and the use of alternative spaces can foster learning and collaboration  (Kariippanon et al 2019).   An adaptable and smart scheduling system can take this flexibility to a new level by using mobile technologies to access all facility spaces and mobile options where appropriate and feasible.

AVOID FRUSTRATION AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Schools often have a variety of spaces that are suited to different learning opportunities, however, they are not always available to everyone.  Sometimes there is perceived 'ownership' of a space or it may have to be reserved well in advance.  Different departments might be responsible for the oversight of spaces and booking may require a complex process.  Spaces are sometimes reserved 'just in case' and may go unused.  All of this can lead to frustration and inefficiency.  An integrated AI facility scheduler connected with all relevant stakeholders can move the system from a just-in-case booking model towards a just-in-time model.

PREPARE STUDENTS TO BE FLEXIBLE

Some of the keys to preparing for the future include flexibility and adaptability.  We know that the workforce is changing at an alarming rate and one of the best things that the education system can do is keep up the pace by being adaptive and flexible.  Providing students with choice and empowering them to learn and grow anywhere at any time is one way to develop innovative leaders of the future.
